Read these with care
- The median is the middle member: half did more, half did less. It is less affected by a few very active members than the average.
- Ministers answer questions rather than ask them, and the presiding officers rarely vote, so their patterns differ.
- Government backbenchers are often given arranged "Dorothy Dixer" questions, which raises their question counts.
- Votes only record ayes and noes, so a missed vote cannot be told apart from a pair (an agreed absence).
- Counts cover only what is on this site, and do not measure electorate or committee work. New members have less history.
Question Time
Question from Nick McKim
The senator asked why the government ignored the recommendation to scrap the RFA loophole and why it had not ended native forest logging. He followed up by asking why the government was not closing the continuous use exemption for land clearing, which he claimed had led to significant deforestation in Queensland. He also asked why the legislation did not explicitly mention forests.
Background: The senator criticized the government's environmental law rewrites, arguing they ignored Professor Samuel's recommendation to remove exemptions for native forest logging under Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs).
Answer from Murray Watt
The minister stated the government remained committed to implementing Graeme Samuel's recommendation to apply national environmental standards to regional forestry agreements. He emphasized that passing these reforms was the priority. In response to the claim that forests were not mentioned, he pointed out that he had just stated the commitment to applying standards to forests, noting he had made similar statements in Senate estimates and other forums.
Question from Nick McKim
The member asked why the Prime Minister was working with the opposition to weaken environmental protection laws for multinational corporations during an environmental crisis.
Background: Industrial salmon farming in Tasmania has caused fish deaths and environmental damage, prompting questions about amendments to the EPBC Act.
Answer from Penny Wong
The minister explained that the amendments address a flaw in the EPBC Act that forces industries to shut down overnight when environmental assessments commence. She argued that the current laws are broken and do not sufficiently protect the environment or workers. She stated that the government is acting to protect jobs in Tasmania and that there is broad agreement that the environmental laws need reform.
Question from Nick McKim
The senator asked why more effort was not made to extinguish the fires early and what the government was doing to protect these globally significant ecosystems.
Background: Fires in the Takayna/Tarkine wilderness had burned for 10 days, destroying a grove containing the world's oldest known Huon pine. Other ancient ecosystems were threatened.
Answer from Jenny McAllister
The minister noted that firefighting is a state responsibility but highlighted federal support, including the deployment of the national large air tanker and a heavy-lift helicopter. She emphasized that this was the first high-risk season with these assets available due to government investment in the national aerial fleet and the National Emergency Management Agency. She disputed the claim that recommendations from a 2016 Greens inquiry were ignored, citing the $1 billion Disaster Ready Fund and investments in early detection technologies.
Question from Nick McKim
The senator asked if Labor would work with the Greens to tax billionaires to fund healthcare, noting that billionaire wealth had doubled in six years to $584 billion. He questioned how much wealth is too much and why the government sides with the wealthy during a cost-of-living crisis.
Background: The Greens proposed a 10 per cent wealth tax on billionaires, claiming it would raise $50 billion to fund free GP visits.
Answer from Katy Gallagher
The minister stated Labor has no plans to adopt the Greens' revenue measures, distinguishing between political promises and government responsibilities. She highlighted Labor's own tax agenda, including superannuation tax concessions for accounts over $3 million and multinational tax reform. She noted the government has invested heavily in Medicare, provided tax cuts for all taxpayers, and delivered energy bill relief. She rejected the proposition that billionaires should be taxed at the rate proposed, emphasising the government's focus on vulnerable communities and existing progressive taxation.
