Read these with care
- The median is the middle member: half did more, half did less. It is less affected by a few very active members than the average.
- Ministers answer questions rather than ask them, and the presiding officers rarely vote, so their patterns differ.
- Government backbenchers are often given arranged "Dorothy Dixer" questions, which raises their question counts.
- Votes only record ayes and noes, so a missed vote cannot be told apart from a pair (an agreed absence).
- Counts cover only what is on this site, and do not measure electorate or committee work. New members have less history.
Question Time
Question from Aaron Violi
The member asked the Minister for Housing to state how many homeowners in the electorate of Hotham were currently in negative equity.
Background: The member cited a reported $1,000 drop in home values in Melbourne's Mount Waverley over 90 days.
Answer from Clare O'Neil
The minister stated that government housing tax reforms would reverse a decade of decline in homeownership rates, enabling 750,000 households to access home ownership. She noted that house prices had risen by 400 per cent over the previous 25 years and argued that low-income young couples were now half as likely to own a home compared to when she was born. The minister asserted that the government's policies were designed to benefit young Australians and restore fairness to the housing market.
Question from Aaron Violi
The member asked who was telling the truth about whether the housing sector was facing a market correction, given conflicting statements from the Minister for Housing and the Treasurer.
Background: Contradictory statements were made by the Minister for Housing and the Treasurer regarding a housing market correction.
Answer from Clare O'Neil
The Minister stated that house prices had risen by 400 per cent over the last 25 years and that this trend must not continue. She argued that the housing market was broken and that the previous government had failed to address the issue. She noted that the previous government built only 373 social and affordable homes in nine years, with none in regional and rural Australia. She asserted that the current government was using all available levers to address the housing crisis.
Question from Aaron Violi
The member asked if the Treasurer would accept that his spending contributed to inflation and the interest rate rise.
Background: The Reserve Bank governor stated that government spending contributes to inflationary pressures.
Answer from Jim Chalmers
The Treasurer repeated that the opposition was conflating public demand as part of aggregate demand with public demand causing recent inflation. He cited the Reserve Bank governor's statement that private demand drove the recent inflationary increase. He criticised the opposition for misquoting the governor and being divided.
Question from Aaron Violi
The member asked whether the Prime Minister's statement that no Australian would be left behind was accurate given that 32 per cent of families had skipped meals, 36 per cent were concerned about food access, and 62 per cent found it difficult to plan for Christmas due to cost-of-living pressures.
Background: The member cited St Vincent de Paul Society research indicating significant cost-of-living pressures, including families skipping meals and difficulty planning for Christmas, to challenge the Prime Minister's claim that no Australian would be left behind.
Answer from Anthony Albanese
The Prime Minister acknowledged real cost-of-living pressures and listed government actions, including a pay rise for minimum and award wage workers totalling over $9,000, an increase in the superannuation guarantee to 12 per cent, and extended paid parental leave. He mentioned energy bill relief, a $10,000 bonus for housing apprentices, and the batteries program taken up by over 100,000 Australians. He highlighted a boost to Medicare with over 1,000 practices signing up to bulk-bill, the opening of 50 urgent care clinics, a 20 per cent cut to student debt, and the extension of the $20,000 instant asset write-off. He also noted the freezing of draught beer excise for two years and stated that all these measures had been opposed by the coalition.
