Read these with care
- The median is the middle member: half did more, half did less. It is less affected by a few very active members than the average.
- Ministers answer questions rather than ask them, and the presiding officers rarely vote, so their patterns differ.
- Government backbenchers are often given arranged "Dorothy Dixer" questions, which raises their question counts.
- Votes only record ayes and noes, so a missed vote cannot be told apart from a pair (an agreed absence).
- Counts cover only what is on this site, and do not measure electorate or committee work. New members have less history.
Question Time
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked how the government was delivering for Australian workers and what could place these gains at risk.
Background: The government had introduced same job, same pay reforms.
Answer from Amanda Rishworth
The minister highlighted the same job, same pay reforms, which had led to pay increases for workers in warehouses, with some earning up to $10,000 more. She stated that the biggest risk to workers' wages was the potential formation of a government by the Liberals, Nationals, and One Nation, who had opposed these laws. She argued that those parties would lead to a race to the bottom in wages.
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked what the government was doing to strengthen the superannuation system and how this compared to other approaches.
Background: The member asked about government actions to strengthen superannuation and help Australians get ahead.
Answer from Jim Chalmers
The Treasurer listed several government initiatives, including raising the super guarantee to 12 per cent, boosting the low-income super tax offset, paying super on paid parental leave, and implementing payday super. He criticised the Coalition and One Nation for opposing compulsory superannuation, claiming they would cut super and reduce economic security for retirees. He also referenced past comments by the Shadow Treasurer acknowledging the need to slow housing price growth to address intergenerational inequity.
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked what steps the government was taking to help Australians deal with rising supermarket prices.
Background: The member asked about steps to help Australians with rising grocery costs.
Answer from Daniel Mulino
The Minister stated that new rules made it illegal for large supermarkets to charge excessive prices compared to supply costs plus a reasonable margin. Penalties for breaches were set at the greater of $10 million, three times the advantage gained, or 10 per cent of yearly sales. He noted that maximum penalties for competition law breaches had increased to $100 million. He also mentioned the mandatory food and grocery code and funding for CHOICE to provide price information.
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked how the government was delivering for workers and what threats existed to this progress.
Background: A government member asked about the government's record on supporting workers.
Answer from Amanda Rishworth
The Minister highlighted same job, same pay laws, which had resulted in pay rises for more than 8,000 workers. She noted new standards for gig workers and reinvigorated enterprise bargaining. She stated that the minimum wage had increased by 30 per cent since the government took office, with a recent 4.75 per cent increase. She identified the Opposition as a threat, noting they had voted against tax cuts and wage increases. She emphasized that the government was committed to supporting workers through tax cuts and wage growth.
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked about the government's delivery for workers in South Australia and requested a comparison with alternative political approaches.
Background: A government member asked the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations how the government was delivering for workers in South Australia and how this compared to other approaches.
Answer from Amanda Rishworth
The Minister reported that South Australia's unemployment rate had dropped from 5 per cent to 4 per cent, adding 90,000 jobs. She noted that full-time workers were earning 19 per cent more than four years ago. The Minister highlighted 200,000 workers benefiting from minimum wage increases and protected penalty rates. She emphasized joint investments with the state government in the Whyalla steelworks and AUKUS, creating close to 10,000 skilled jobs. She contrasted this with the Coalition's past record, citing the loss of local car manufacturing.
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked for an update on the Reserve Bank's interest rate decision made that afternoon.
Background: The Reserve Bank of Australia announced an interest rate decision.
Answer from Jim Chalmers
The Treasurer confirmed the Reserve Bank had increased the cash rate by 25 basis points. He acknowledged the pressure this placed on families and businesses. He emphasized that the Reserve Bank's statement attributed inflationary pressure to private demand rather than government spending. He noted that public demand had retreated while private demand strengthened. He reiterated the government's focus on cost-of-living relief and budget repair.
Question from Steve Georganas
The member asked how the government was progressing its commitment to help people increase their income and retain a larger share of their earnings.
Background: The government had passed legislation to protect penalty and overtime rates.
Answer from Amanda Rishworth
The minister stated that legislation protecting overtime and penalty rates for 2.6 million award workers had come into effect. She noted that without this action, certain retail employees might have suffered a $10,000 loss. The minister highlighted that average wages had increased by $9,000 per year since the government took office. She also mentioned measures to stop underpayment of labour hire workers and tax cuts for all taxpayers.
