Question from Warwick Stacey
The member asked when the Port of Darwin would return to Australian control, given the Prime Minister's recent visit to China. He questioned whether the Prime Minister had raised the issue with Chinese leaders and if the government had a plan to reclaim the port within the current term.
Background: The Prime Minister had recently visited China. The government had previously stated it wanted the Port of Darwin returned to Australian hands.
Answer from Penny Wong
The minister defended the Prime Minister's engagement with China as responsible diplomacy. She confirmed that the government's position was that the port should not have been sold and should return to Australian hands. However, she stated that this was not a matter for bilateral negotiation with China but would proceed through appropriate commercial considerations and in the national interest.
