Read these with care
- The median is the middle member: half did more, half did less. It is less affected by a few very active members than the average.
- Ministers answer questions rather than ask them, and the presiding officers rarely vote, so their patterns differ.
- Government backbenchers are often given arranged "Dorothy Dixer" questions, which raises their question counts.
- Votes only record ayes and noes, so a missed vote cannot be told apart from a pair (an agreed absence).
- Counts cover only what is on this site, and do not measure electorate or committee work. New members have less history.
Question Time
Question from Garth Hamilton
The member asked when the Prime Minister would scrap the $5,000 allied health cap for veterans, alleging that funds were being diverted to overseas climate events.
Background: The member claimed the government was cutting $748 million from allied health services for veterans while spending on overseas climate events.
Answer from Anthony Albanese
The Prime Minister stated that the government had increased expenditure on Veterans' Affairs and raised fees for allied health professionals to improve access, as recommended by the royal commission. He explained that the new $5,000 review threshold replaced the previous limit of 12 visits, allowing for more care before a review was required. He clarified that the changes would not affect veterans on special rate disability pensions or those with catastrophic injuries. He noted that the changes took effect on 27 July and that consultation was ongoing.
Question from Garth Hamilton
The member asked the Minister for Climate Change and Energy to disclose the cost to taxpayers of the Capacity Investment Scheme.
Background: The member asked for the taxpayer cost of the Capacity Investment Scheme.
Answer from Chris Bowen
The minister stated that the scheme was treated as commercial in confidence in the budget, similar to previous government programs like the Underwriting New Generation Investments program. He noted that the projects aimed to provide cheaper energy and cited a press release from the shadow minister acknowledging that the net zero agenda was delivering affordable energy.
Question from Garth Hamilton
The member asked whether any Australian government agencies had provided operational support to repatriate ISIS sympathisers since 2022.
Background: The shadow assistant minister for energy security asked if any Australian agencies had provided operational support to repatriate ISIS sympathisers since 2022.
Answer from Pat Conroy
The Minister stated that the government had not provided and would not provide assistance to anyone in that cohort.
Question from Garth Hamilton
The member asked the Minister to assure a fuel supplier that there were no fuel supply shortages in Australia, citing reports of empty terminals.
Background: A fuel supplier reported zero petrol supply at Newcastle and Brisbane terminals.
Answer from Chris Bowen
The Minister assured that national fuel supplies were secure, with 18 vessels having arrived and 33 more scheduled. He noted that the minimum stock obligation held three billion litres of diesel and 1.56 billion litres of petrol. He acknowledged increased demand at Newcastle (136 per cent) and Brisbane (115 per cent) terminals, which caused short-term pressures, but stated that national stocks were good and the government was working with industry to distribute fuel efficiently.
Question from Garth Hamilton
The member asked if the Minister for Climate Change and Energy had consulted the Minister for Resources before signing the agreement to phase out crucial industries.
Background: The Minister for Climate Change and Energy had signed an agreement to phase out fossil fuels, while the Minister for Resources had stated that coal and gas were essential for energy security.
Answer from Chris Bowen
The Minister stated that he and the Minister for Resources agreed entirely on the need for a transition to renewable energy, with gas serving as a backup for renewables and supporting heavy industry and home heating. He cited previous statements from the shadow minister for energy and the Leader of the Opposition supporting the transition to renewables. He noted that October was the first month in Australian history that 50 per cent of electricity came from renewables. He emphasized that the government was working closely on the gas market review to manage the transition.
