Question Time
Question from Gerard Rennick
The member asked if the government would address reverse tax tariffs and offshore profit-shifting to improve the budget position. He referenced structural issues and the need to support domestic businesses.
Background: Senator Rennick asked the Minister representing the Treasurer about tax leakage from offshore profit shifting and the impact of US tariffs.
Answer from Katy Gallagher
The minister stated that the Economic Reform Council was focused on tax system integrity, including multinational tax reform. She mentioned efforts to define Australian businesses for procurement purposes to support small businesses. She affirmed that the government continued to look for ways to level the playing field.
Question from Gerard Rennick
The member asked why the government had not condemned human rights abuses by the new Syrian regime, suggesting Australian foreign policy was controlled by intelligence agencies interested in imperialism.
Background: Syria's regime had been overthrown by groups formerly associated with ISIS and al-Qaeda, raising concerns about human rights abuses against minorities.
Answer from Penny Wong
The minister rejected the assertion that foreign policy was controlled by intelligence agencies, stating Australia supports international law and human rights. She noted that Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) was listed as a terrorist organisation in 2022. She stated the government would monitor HTS's actions and urged all parties to protect civilians.
