Question Time
Question from Brian Mitchell
The member asked how the government was strengthening Medicare and why urgent action was needed after a decade of neglect.
Background: The member asked about strengthening Medicare through bulk-billing, more doctors, and cheaper medicines.
Answer from Mark Butler
The Minister highlighted the opening of a Medicare urgent care clinic in Bridgewater, Tasmania, which had treated over 1,200 patients. He noted that four in five GP visits are currently bulk-billed, a figure he deemed too low. He cited three significant increases to the Medicare rebate in the last three years and a tripling of the bulk-billing incentive, resulting in a seven per cent increase in bulk-billing in Tasmania.
Question from Brian Mitchell
The member asked how urgent care clinics were improving access to doctors and if alternative policies would make it harder to see a doctor.
Background: A government member asked about the impact of urgent care clinics and whether other proposals would hinder access to doctors.
Answer from Mark Butler
The Minister stated that 87 urgent care clinics had been opened, exceeding the promise of 50, and had treated over 1.1 million patients, all fully bulk-billed. He highlighted that these clinics relieved pressure on emergency departments. He warned that the opposition had opposed these investments and had previously proposed cuts to Medicare, including a GP tax, which would force patients back into crowded emergency departments.
