Wilkie argued that the Australian Football League was pressuring the Tasmanian government to build a third stadium at Macquarie Point, despite the state already having two suitable venues in Launceston and Bellerive. Wilkie contended that the majority of Tasmanians opposed the project due to its high cost and lack of necessity, noting that existing stadiums rarely reached capacity. Wilkie detailed how the estimated cost had risen from an initial $715 million to potentially $3.12 billion when including debt servicing, far exceeding original taxpayer contributions. Wilkie criticised the state government for ignoring a Tasmanian Planning Commission report that questioned the project's viability and for proceeding despite warnings from engineers and architects. Furthermore, Wilkie pointed to the state's broader financial mismanagement, citing cost blowouts in the Spirit of Tasmania ferry project and berthing infrastructure, while highlighting urgent needs in social housing and elective surgery waiting lists.
