McKenzie described Shanahan as an extraordinary individual who dedicated her life to purpose and serving others. McKenzie outlined Shanahan's career path, which began with medical training in the 1950s, leading to a quarter-century of practice as a cardiothoracic surgeon at various hospitals including Prince Henry's and the Alfred. Shanahan later returned to education, graduating in law in 1989 and serving on the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for nearly 30 years. McKenzie noted that Shanahan was highly respected by colleagues and staff for her expertise, humility, and ability to draw out the best in people. The member expressed gratitude for the support received from political colleagues, constituents, and a close-knit group of friends who helped care for Shanahan in her final months.
